About Zalzali

Zalzali is a cabaret fusion belly dance troupe from Colorado Springs, CO, coordinated by Neisa Salima. "Zalzali" means "earthquake" in Arabic.

Zalzali Drum Performance

Zalzali’s repertoire of group pieces and soloists includes such styles and props as drum solos, veils, floor work, swords, fans, daggers, fire, trays, and zills. The members of Zalzali have over 35 years of combined bellydancing experience. In addition to belly dancing, Zalzali’s members have studied other forms of dance such as Irish step dancing, flamenco, and salsa.

Prior to forming Zalzali, its members had been dancing together under the name Alrakasat. Alrakasat is a troupe formed by Mahisha Alail, under whom all the members of Zalzali have studied. When Mahisha moved from Colorado Springs in 2006, the troupe continued under the coordination of Neisa Salima. In 2007, the active members of Alrakasat -- Alima Ali Khan, Leyla Amar, Neisa Salima, Rya, Saahira, and Shoshanna -- decided to continue dancing together under the new name Zalzali.

Zalzali as Alrakasat at the Colorado Rennaisance Festival

Zalzali currently produces the monthly “Night at the Oasis” show at the Cedars Jazz Club in Colorado Springs. In the past, as Alrakasat, the members of Zalzali have appeared in the “Dancing the Ancestors’ Echo” series of stage shows, “Raks al Sehr” in Fort Collins, CO, “Mediterranean Echoes” in Cincinnati, OH, the Delilah! Showcase in Broomfield, CO, and the Colorado Renaissance Festival.
