About Malia
 |
Malia is the people's choice in Hawaii as a Middle-Eastern dance performer and instructor. Her energy and ability to captivate her audience with her universal crowd-pleasing choreography and use of enchanting props have taken her to numerous prestigious productions and events.
As a young child, Malia began studying many forms of dance, which include, hip-hop, ballroom, salsa, jazz and hula. She also engaged in various forms of martial arts, such as, Tai Chi, Aikido, and Tai Kwon Do. All of her training has augmented the development of her unique form of Middle-Eastern dance, which Malia has coined her “Malia in Hawaii” style.
She was introduced to middle-eastern dance in 1999 while looking for a fun and distinctive dance class. Shakti (Sundae Merrick) was her first instructor, whom Malia deems as a mentor and remains an inspiration to Malia until this day. Engrossed with belly dance, Malia developed a soul-driven devotion to learn as much as possible. Her background training in Middle-Eastern dance includes Saidi, Ghawazee, Folkloric, American Cabaret, Egyptian, and Persian styles.
As a professional performer, artistic director and choreographer, she has had the privilege of being a featured performer, and choreographer at many events including Mardi Gras Follies at the Hawaii Theater (2005 and 2007), University of Hawaii Symphony (2006), Carnival of Stars, Richmond, CA (2004, 2007, 2008), and Rakkasah West (2003 and 2005).
Malia is part owner and producer of the National “Hawaii Belly Dancer Magazine”, a free monthly magazine that's goal is to bring the belly dance community together and educate the public about Middle-Eastern culture and dance since its inception in July 2005.
As an expert Middle-Eastern dance instructor, Malia has taught over 1000 students from around the world, hailing from Japan, Egypt, Germany, Brazil, France, Australia, Texas, New York, China, Dominican Republic, Russia, Philippines, and Canada.

Workshops
Malia will be teaching three workshops on February 20th and 21st. All workshops will be two hours long. Preregistration is highly recommended to reserve your slot and guarantee the best price.
Preregistration cost (by February 15th) is $35 for one workshop, $60 for two, and $85 for all three. Cost at the door will be $42 for one, $72 for two, and $100 for all three.
The "Malia in Hawaii" format is an enjoyable and innovative way to fuse all styles of belly dance into one, creating a one of a kind style of belly dance. Malia's primary goal as an instructor is for you to enjoy your class experience. While in her class, she is welcoming, supportive and nurturing as you learn about your body and how it moves within the different body planes and beyond.

Fluid and Feminine Veil
Saturday, February 20th, 1:30 pm - 3:30 pm
This workshop focuses on beginner to advanced veil tricks as well as all the tools you need to create your own veil solo, either improvised or choreographed. You’ll learn to use a silk rectangular veil with techniques and traveling including how to execute spins and turns with grace and passes around your body and how to gain full control over your veil, along with other beautiful moves to mesmerize your audience.
Malia will also share professional tips for smoothly getting out of veil entanglements, and avoiding them in the first place.
Veil technique works the entire upper body and uses the arms and shoulders in their full range of motion. It is great for developing great dance posture.
